Loc Extensions
Locs styled by Quincy

While thinking for weeks about a low maintenance style for this summer, I saw this woman with a gorgeous loced style. At a closer look, I could see that they were extensions. Now I was even more interested.

I have had many hairstyles but never fake locs. First, I thought it would take too much time to get loc extensions. At least six hours estimated some salons because each loc has to be handmade before attaching it to your hair. That is a lot of work and naturally those hours come with an according price which is more than reasonable if you are contemplating locs but maybe not if you just want to do it to write about the experience.

I decided to ask for the stylist's info anyway and I am so glad I did. I couldn't believe what I heard. I could get my locs done in two hours for $180.

Quincy is one of the most patience and friendly stylists I have ever met. All the questions I bombarded her with, she patiently answered so I decided to give it a try.

This beautiful lady from St. Lucia works from a salon on Ave D in Brooklyn. By the time I arrived she was working on a client, one of her other clients was under the hood and a few others were waiting. Clearly she had the most customers. Without an assistant I watched her styling each client one by one very efficiently. All styles were unique and eye catching at the same time.

When it was my turn, I could choose color and length. I choose the color 1b but didn't think I needed that much length. Quincy then asked if I wanted it styled in one of her updos. Of course I did. I never thought I could rock one of those intriguing loced styles. These styles do need length though and that was ok for me. Enough length for an updo.

Extensions are always a bit tight and I always have to get used to that but I was really incredibly happy with this style. It's a completely different look, yet quite natural. These are the most natural extensions I have ever had. Ok, the hair is a bit long, definitely not my length but they look so real, it's unbelievable.

When I met an old friend who has beautiful locs for seven years, he looked at my hair and said "Huh, Since when?" I took my hair down and said, this is how long we haven't seen each other! The expression on his face was priceless. He just couldn't believe his eyes that I had locs this long. After a good laugh, I told him that they weren't real. We compared our locs and although you could feel the difference, you could hardly see the difference.

Now let me tell you. I am enjoying my fake locs more than any other hairstyle ever. Why? Because the style looks so very natural, these are the lightest extensions I've ever had and best of all it's a get up and go hairstyle! That is priceless.

I am not interested in locking my hair, but I really like this style!! I wonder if I am able to get the loc extensions without the intentions of locking my natural hair. Also, are there any extension locking sytlist in the Ohio area??

Your hair looks beautiful! I just want to find out how long this hair style lasts? Do u know any good natural hair dressers in the DC, MD, VA area?

I wish I would have did this before I got my sisterlocks. I had sisterlocks for a year and I just cut them off a few days ago. I wasn't happy with the way my hair looked and alot of my locks were weak in some areas and started breaking off. Back rocking the TWA for now.

They are absolutely beautiful ans since I am in New Jersey, I have made my appointment with Quincey. My question is, how long are you going to keep yours in? If I wanted to transition them into actual locs...would this be healthy or okay? My top priority is healthy hair. Thanks for your feedback!!

Brooklyn, NY is a long way away from Tennessee. Could you suggest a stylist who is just as good as Quincy who can do these loc extensions? Either in Atlanta, Tennessee, or maybe even in Louisville, KY.

    Thanks, Lynn

oooooo I should try this out too because I am thinking about doing locks soon.

@ Scarletjazz: Braided hair is always a bit uncomfortable in the beginning and I am always concerned about too tightly braided hair. These locs were not too tight though. Certainly uncomfortable because of the updo in the beginning but that was it.
Micros are a problem because tiny braids are prone to breakage, especially if with extensions.

These are beautiful she did an excellent job. My question is it looks so tight almost like micro braid tight around the edges. Were you concerned about that? I wore micros for many yrs and since I've been natural they are still not back to the way they are suppose to be. Just asking. :-)

Is this style permanent, or can it be removed like any other style with extensions? Just curious...I just recently went natural...again! LOL I've been thinking about locking my hair but I want to be sure that this hairstyle will fit me.

  • stylistikk

No the style is not permanent and yes, like all other extensions, these locs can be removed.

I have been eyeing this style all summer. It is really nice.

I did think about locs this summer. I was so tired of styling and my hair was acting up. Didn't feel good, didn't look good no matter what I did. So I was about to cut my hair short once more to loc it. Turned out the acting up was the after math of me having my appendix removed. Anti biotics and stuff like that affect your body and your hair comes last.

So, I still cut my hair but since I know myself quite well I was looking for the easiest low maintenance way to loc because here is the secret: I don't like doing my hair at all. I love it when it's done, I love to look at styles and think about styles but doing them is like all other "girly" things to me like makeup. Love looking at it, thinking about it but putting it on and especially keeping it on is such a drag.

This does seem the best way for me to loc, so who knows. In any case what exploring all the styling does for me is loving nappy hair even more. The options are endless and the styles here i...

I have seen your different style over the last few years. And I have to say I love the faux locs on you. Have you ever thought about locing your real hair? Just curious! I love my locs and yes, mine are real. But the locs look absolutely stunning on you. Bless!!!

  • mamag

This looks awesome. I have one question if you decided to not take them out could you lock you hair into these extensions?

  • stylistikk

msnora: Yes your hair starts to loc when you don't take the extensions out and you just re-twist the roots like you do with real locs. Of course you can cut the extensions when your own hair is loced.

  • tlynnw

    Awesome!

  • poochie44

Your hair looks just beautiful, AY-MAY-ZING!!! ;-) I was just in Brooklyn this weekend and I wish I had seen this article before I left. I have 4-month-old braidlocks that I adore, but I am realy interested in calling Qunicy the next time I'm in town, just for a change of pace.
