Do you have locs ?

Well if you do you should be covering them up at night and here's why:

10) Got cats? If you do, then so do your locks.
9)Got dogs? If you do then so do you're locks.
8) Got fuzz balls on you're Pj's? If you do then so do you're locks.
7) Got fuzz on your blanket? If you do then so do you're locks.
6) Got lent in your vent! If you do then so do you're locks.
5) Got dust on your night stand? If you do then so do you're locks.
4) Got bed bugs ? If you do then so do you're locks.
3) Got dust mites? If you do then so do you're locks.
2) Got dirty hands? If you do then so do you're locks.
1) Got build up? If you do then so do you're locks.

I hate to get so graphic, but if you have any of these issues then you will have issues if you are not covering up your licks with a satin scarf at night. It's about the most basic thing you can do for the health of your locks. Just do it or you will wish you did. A satin scarf is an ounce of prevention that helps form a barrier between you and your locks as they are matted nets of hair seeking to capture everything you run across in life. They need your help. Protect them at night and you will save yourself loads of time and heartache that doesn't manifest until two or three years later.

I was asked a great question from a sister that has taken the lock journey with me. Many have asked and I wanted to share.

Looking great! Congrats on reaching your 5 year mark. Do you plan to stay loc'd another 5 years?

Thanks! I plan on staying locked. I have no. desire. whatsoevahhh to play with my loose hair. I had fun but I truly locked for a reason. I did not lock bc I longed for locks nor admired them. It was the ultimate protective hairstyle so I signed up for it and do all that I would want to do with loose hair with my locks. I can do puffs, curls, ponies, braids/twist outs the whole nine.

When my hair is wet it is soo heavy;but,I try to pile it up on top of my head and tie a scarf around the base of it or braids in an up-bun until it dries....tks for asking

I sincerely locked because I know that locking would be the singular most effective method of protecting my natural hair. I have extremely fragile hair and, God willing, I have no intent of cutting my locks off. Will I cut? Yes, probably into a styles but not completely off and away, unless something life threatening happens that impacts my ability to keep them. I hope this encourages someone out there to hang in there.I chose to lock when I was tired of my loose hair. I did not enjoy my loose hair anymore. Quite frankly, I resented it. It took me away from my children. It kept me away from social events and appointments as I sat under the dryer waiting for it to 'set', or stayed away from the public out of fear and retribution. I watched it poof and frizz up after 'setting' it all weekend and preparing it for a fly twist out. I watched my edges disappear to a rapid degree as I wore my afro puffs. I watched the crown of my head shread away from manipulations and break off to barely an inch of it's life. My arms grew weary of the the wrestling match to pull my hair back into a neat bun that would fit my corporate environment. My budget was hit be the constant product consumerism I was victim to. I was just tired of the thought, preparation, wear and tear of it all. And, I was ready to lock.

To this day I hold to this belief. Do NOT lock until you are ready to lock. How do you know when you're ready? when you are good and tired that's when. Yet, you are commited to your natural hair that's when. Not because you lust after someone's locks or you come str8 out of a perm. Lock when you are tired. Then, and only then will the locks be a part of you and not a hair style. There are other options, like extension locks to get if you are not committed to the journey.

Of course, In My Humble Opinion.

Yup. Locks are matted chords of dead, shed hair. Actually, all hair is dead. Oh, but there's more. Did you know there there are finitely 100,000 hairs that grow on your head at infancy. Those hair strands are terminal and will only regenerate a certain number of lifecyles. Those hair strands will cycle through telogen, catagen and anagen phases of growth, rest and recovery. The anagen phase is the hair growth phase and can last 2-6 years. The catagen phase is the resting phase between anagen and telogen. After 2 to 6 years of growing, that hair is tired, and perhaps at its most vulnerable state .The next phase is the telogen phase. During this phase, the hair follicle, the only living part of the hair strand, that houses the papilla becomes visible.  The hair begins to sheds during the telogen phase, falling into the matrix of the lock and the cycle begins again. Approximately 100 hairs are shed a day, and locking works by 'catching' those locks that release during the telogen phase. As a result locks are an intricate matrix of shed hair, various lengths. The art of locking works by retaining this shed hair, that would normally be released if the hair were loose. So, it's all a matter of perspective, dead or alive, the choice is yours! Keep it Knotty!

Lock Appreciation Day

The very first Lock Appreciation Day was June 25, 2011. The inception of this glorious day was the brainstorm of QO Chemist a frequent YouTube Blogger and Fotki, Blogspot, Facebook and Nappturality member. QO Chemist is all over the internet sharing her lock pride with the masses. As a result, at the beginning of the year, she solicited input on a day that all locked heads could join together in unison to recognize the first annual Lock Appreciation Day, affectionately called LAD. It was decided that June 25, 2011 would mark the first day that we celebrate the beauty of a lock together.

The beauty of LAD is that loose-haired naturals joined in to celebrate with locked heads alike. The beauty of celebrating one another is amazing. It's hard to do this nappy thing in a cracked-out world. It's even harder to decide to take a second journey to lockdom. A journey that magnifies the state of nappiness with all of the frizz, buds, hairballs, fuzz and messiness. Because the decision to take this journey marginalizes a locked head even further from mainstream society, it means alot to have a day where all love, lift-up and embrace all stages of nappiness.

The timing of The KNotty Truth's First Comprehensive Lock Manual and Lock Appreciation Day, manifest that it was the right time for the universe to align and recognize the journey of dreaded hair. Vloggers, Bloggers, Facebookers, Tweeters and Forums all over the internet celebrated on and offline in unison to mark this day, of new awareness. The door is open, welcoming new lockers into the fold with educational resources and a community that is willing and open to share and guide the way.

This year, I spent the day conducting a workshop for women on the fundamentals to Creating Their Own Beautiful Locks on a Dime, wrapping up the day with Vending The KNotty Truth Books, promoting awareness to professionals and laypeople alike. It was a great day to bring awareness to this over-due holiday and unwrap some of the mystery surrounding locks. Next year, the sky is the limit! Whether locked or loose, let's remember to celebrate June 25th as a day to celebrate the amazing ability of our hair to coil, poof, matt and flow, the choice is yours.
